JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team closed out the 2016 season, but went out with a valiant effort in a 2-1 loss to Belmont on Thursday evening at the JSU Soccer Field.
The loss caps off a 5-13-1 overall record and 2-8 in Ohio Valley Conference play.  The Bruins improved to 6-6-4 on the season and picked up their fifth OVC win to conclude the regular season at 5-4-1 in the league.  Belmont's season will be extended to the OVC Tournament that will get underway on Sunday.
The Bruins used a quick start to take an early 2-0 lead over Jax State.  BU needed just 15 seconds to record the first of two goals within the first eight minutes of the season finale.  Meg Howard found a soft spot in the box to deliver the first goal after MacKenzie Firek had a touch pass to Howard in the box.
Howard found herself on the other end of BU's second scoring play as she dished out an assist near the top of the box to Belicia Mendiola.  Mendiola powered the ball in to the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage.  BU, who edged JSU in total shots by one, had eight of its 12 total shots in the opening half.  JSU finished with 11 total shots, including six in the second half.
Junior
Kayla Thompson gave JSU life just inside the final 10 minutes of the match as she registered her second goal of the season with a dribble past the defense and sent the ball to the right post.  Freshman
Emma Meadows aided in the netted ball as she gave the ball to Thompson from the left side.  The assist gave Meadows her fourth of the season, which led all Gamecocks in 2016.
Thursday's tilt marked the final match for the large senior class.  The class has helped
Neil Macdonald establish the program within the league and participated in two consecutive OVC Tournaments in 2014 and 2015.  JSU's run to the 2014 OVC Championship match will be one of the highlights that the senior class will be remembered for.  The senior class includes –
Katie Thomas,
Nicola Dominikovich,
Carsen Taylor,
Abbey Clausen,
Chelsi Bender,
Blair Barker,
Mackenzie Bellows,
Justine Panchuk and
Kristen Hoo.
