JACKSONVILLE – On a night that Jacksonville State honored its seniors, it was the freshmen that highlighted the 2-1 double overtime win over Southeast Missouri on Friday night at the JSU Soccer Field.
Playing in their second consecutive double overtime contest and falling 2-1 last Sunday to SIU Edwardsville, the Gamecocks reversed that outcome with a golden goal in the 107
th minute.
Nadia Plawiuk netted the game winner after taking a cross from the right side of the box and sent the ball past the SEMO keeper in the left back pocket. Plawiuk, from Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada, now has three goals to her credit as a first-year player.
Plawiuk, who had fresh legs after being inserted late in the contest, now shares the team lead in goals-scored this season as she matched freshman
Cheyenne Carden, who put the Gamecocks up 1-0 in the fifth minute of the contest. All three of Carden's goals have come in OVC play. Carden's goal was described by head coach
Neil Macdonald as one of the best that you will see in college soccer. The Huntsville, Alabama centered a deflected ball off of a JSU corner kick at the left side of the box and in to the back of the net.
Two of the seniors honored prior to the match, contributed to both scoring plays as
Mackenzie Bellows and
Justine Panchuk were credited with an assist on each scoring play. Bellows belted a solid corner kick to set up Jax State's initial goal, while
Justine Panchuk starting the game-ending goal. The assists were the first of the season for the pair of seniors. Both veterans played the entire 107 minutes.
The win pushed JSU's overall mark to 5-8-1 and it earned its second OVC win of the season to add three points in the conference standings. The Redhawks dropped to 7-4-2 and 1-2-2 in OVC play.
"To come out with a win tonight is huge for us and it is funny how last Sunday we come out and look fantastic and get a loss and tonight I thought we struggled in some parts of the game," said
Neil Macdonald. "We needed this one tonight and it puts us back in the mix again. I give all the credit to the girls after struggling in the second half. I thought we dominated the overtime sessions."
Friday's match featured the top-two shooting teams in the conference. Both JSU and SEMO averaged 13 or more shots per match entering the outing. The two clubs combined for 37 shots with SEMO holding a plus-three advantage, 20-17. JSU controlled the extra sessions with five shots in the 17 minutes of extra time. Carden led the Gamecocks with three total attempts, including a pair of on goal chances.
Both goalkeepers had solid efforts in goal as JSU's
Caroline Robinson and SEMO's Kindra Lierz had eight stops each.
"Caroline (Robinson) was super-steady the entire game and she really did well handling air balls tonight and dominating that six-yard box," added Macdonald.
The Gamecocks will look to complete the weekend sweep on Sunday, hosting UT Martin at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
