JSU Soccer Falls to UT Martin in Overtime

JACKSONVILLE – Playing in its third consecutive overtime contest, the Jacksonville State soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to UT Martin on Sunday afternoon to close out the OVC home weekend.

The Gamecocks split the weekend after posting a double overtime 2-1 win over Southeast Missouri on Friday.  JSU fell to 5-9-1 overall and 2-4 in OVC play, while the Skyhawks earned their first conference win of the season and improved to 4-10 overall.

JSU carried over the momentum from Friday's key win over SEMO with a quick scoring play in Sunday's matinee.  The match was not one-minute deep before Jax State delivered the first goal of the contest.  Sophomore Claire Petersen found the back of the net after junior Kayla Thompson started the run and included freshman Cheyenne Carden in the mix before the result.  The goal was Petersen's second of the season.  Carden and Thompson closed out a solid weekend as Carden turned in three points over the weekend after a goal on Friday night.  The Huntsville, Alabama native leads JSU in total points with seven on the season.  Thompson's assist on Sunday was the second of the weekend.  Carden and Petersen combined for six of JSU's 11 shots.
The Skyhawks equalized seven minutes later as Katelyn Colvin delivered a goal from Amy McGivern in the seventh minute.

UTM's goal was the last one until the game winner by McGivern two minutes in to the overtime session.  After UTM was awarded a free kick from midfield, goalkeeper Mackenzie Crawford belted a ball in to the box for McGivern to finish the play. UTM finished with 15 total shots and had a plus-four advantage over JSU.  The Skyhawks had eight of their match total in the opening 45 minutes and had six in the second half.  The Gamecocks had six chances in the final 45 minutes, but could not post a second goal.

JSU will be on the road in the OVC for the next three matches, beginning with a Thursday night contest at Morehead State on Oct. 13.  JSU's road trip continues the following weekend at Murray State and Austin Peay.  The Gamecocks will close out the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27, hosting Belmont.
