Late Basket Lifts New Orleans Past Jax State

JACKSONVILLE – The University of New Orleans' Randi Brown hit the game-winning basket in the waning seconds to top the Jacksonville State women's basketball team, 81-79, on Tuesday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

The non-conference home loss by the Gamecocks snapped a four-game winning streak in home non-conference games dating back to the last three out-of-league games last season.  The setback drops JSU to 2-3 on the season, while the Privateers notched their first win over an NCAA Division I foe this season and improved to 2-3.  Jax State will now turn its attention to the Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Tournament that gets started in Boca Raton, Florida on Friday, Nov. 25.  JSU will face the host-Owls of FAU at 11 a.m. CST to open the two-day event in South Florida.  JSU will play either Richmond or Florida A&M on Saturday.

In a game that saw 13 ties and nine lead changes, it was UNO's Brown who made the driving basket to cap off the road win with just under 10 seconds left on the game clock.  JSU had one more chance to send the game in to overtime with a shot by Tyler Phlion, but her attempt rattled off the rim.

The Gamecocks, who gave up a season-high 81 points and the most points since UT Martin tallied 88 points against the Gamecocks back on December 30, 2013, needed a 14-2 run late in the third quarter and in to the final quarter to bet back in the contest.  JSU trailed by as many as 13 points with 1:45 left to play in the third quarter at 60-47.  Senior Kelly Naughton drilled one of JSU's 10 three pointers in the game in the final seconds of the period to give JSU a boost heading in to the final 10 minutes.  Naughton's basket sparked JSU's run as the deficit shrunk to 62-61 with 8:21 left to play on Lacey Buchanon's layup.

"One of the reasons why we were atrocious defensively was because our energy level was poor.  It was poor in the first half and we just happened to make some shot to be tied at halftime," said head coach Rick Pietri.  "UNO wanted to come in our house and take it and we did not respond in the third quarter.  The team who won the game tonight, deserved to win the game tonight.  We competed in the fourth quarter and we waited a long time to compete.  We had many chances to take the lead and just couldn't," added Pietri.

Buchanon, who had 11 points in her first game back in Jacksonville on Sunday, highlighted JSU's second-half effort with 14 points in the final 20 minutes.  She finished the game shooting 6-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-9 from the field in the second half. After UNO pushed the lead back out to five points at 68-63, Buchanon and Kiandria 'Ki-Ki' Patterson hit baskets in consecutive trips to even the game after Patterson knocked down a three pointer.  In the final five minutes, the game was tied four times, but JSU could not get a stop and clutch basket down the stretch.

JSU had a chance to take the lead with 15 seconds left in the contest as sophomore Chloe Long rattled off a pair of free throws before Brown's game-winning attempt.

JSU's ability to hit the long range shot kept it in the contest as it hit double figure three pointers for the second time this season.  Jax State matched a program record 14 treys in the season opener at Florida State.  Junior Gretchen Morrison, who led all JSU scorers with 17 points, connected on 5-of-10 from behind the three-point arc.  Patterson added four treys and turned in 14 points off the bench.  Phelion and Naughton added eight points, while Long posted six points.

Brown collected a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.  Brown turned in an 11-of-20 shooting night, including four three pointers.  Jewel Angelo added 12 points off the bench to aid in the win.
