Final ResultsNASHVILLE – It was another banner day for the Jacksonville State track and field team as a program record was matched and had six top-10 finishes on the final day of the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Tennessee State.
The Gamecocks doubled their point total from a season ago with 47 points to claim ninth.
Sophomore
Courtney Bennett capped off a stellar weekend as she tied the program indoor record in the shot put on Saturday. Bennett, from Hinesville, Georgia, turned in a toss of 47'3.75" to match former Gamecock
Danielle Moss' mark in 2015. On Friday, Bennett established a new program record for the indoor weight throw. JSU's 20 lb. weight throw record went down by Bennett with a toss of 56' 9.5' to earn a spot on the medal stand. The sophomore from Hinesville, Georgia replaced Crystal Estes' throw of 53'4 ¼ in February of 2009.
Bennett's mark made the medal stand as she finished with a silver medal in the event.
The field events carried the Gamecocks throughout the weekend. Freshman
Brittany Cook turned in a career-best effort in the triple jump with a jump of 39'5.5" to claim fifth place in the event. JSU's
Ashley Williams and
Blake Perry also finished in the top-10 in the event, holding the sixth and eighth spots in the final standings of the event.
Sophomore
Samantha Patterson placed fifth in the pole vault after a leap of 10'9".
In the running events, sophomore
Kayla Thompson clocked a time of 24.89 in the 200 meter event to finish in fifth place. JSU's quartet of Thompson,
Jasmine Parham,
Loren Moorer and
Gina Carnovale clocked a season-best 3:54.45 to finish eighth in the mile relay.
"We basically doubled our point production from last year's conference meet, said head coach
Steve Ray. "We've got some things going on in several events and we still have some work to do in a few areas, but all-in-all I thought we had a very solid two days."
The Gamecocks will now turn their attention to the outdoor portion of the season on March 12, hosting the Gamecock Quad at the JSU Track and Field Complex.
