JACKSONVILLE —
Whitney Gillespie no-hit Morehead State in game one and
Taylor West tossed a shutout of her own in game two to lead Jacksonville State to a doubleheader sweep of Morehead State on Saturday.
Gillespie's first career seven-inning no-hitter was the driving force in a 3-0 win to start the day, while West's first complete-game shutout of the year paced a 6-0 win in the nightcap.
A sophomore from Pelham, Gillespie (9-1) had just one blemish on her line in the no-no, a leadoff walk in the second, but she retired the final 18 batters she faced to lower her season earned run average to 1.21. It was her second no-hitter of the season and saw her strike out five batters.
Gillespie was backed by a 7-hit performance from her teammates, which was led by
Stephanie Lewis' 2-for-3 game. She also had one RBI and one run scored. Her batting average now sits at .390, which is second on the team, and her average in OVC play is a team-best .460 after her 4-for-7 day.
Emily Church,
Anna Chisolm and
Emily Woodruff also recorded one hit apiece during game one, while
Ella Denes and
Jamie McGuire both had RBI for the Gamecocks.
All three runs came in the third inning, when Chisolm was hit by a pitch to start things. Denes doubled her in and then scored on an infield hit from Lewis, who scored the final run on a McGuire double into the right field corner.
Mackenzie Grossman (7-11) suffered the loss for MSU after allowing three runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
In the second game, West (9-5) tossed a complete game shutout while striking out six and allowing only six hits through the seven innings. She threw 106 pitches to 24 batters and lowered her ERA to 2.77 on the season.
After Morehead State threatened but failed to score in the top of the first, Jacksonville State got on the scoreboard first by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the frame. McGuire and Church had back-to-back RBI singles to give JSU an early 2-0 lead. The Eagles threatened again in the top of the fourth, but a line drive back to West and a throw to first got JSU out of the inning with a double play.
The Gamecocks added two more in the bottom of the fourth when Lewis tripled home Denes and then scored on a fielding error by the MSU shortstop Karly Thompson. The following inning, Chisolm reached on another Thompson error that scored
Hayley Sims and Woodruff blasted a solo home run to end the scoring for JSU.
Allison Rager (10-5) took the loss for MSU, allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The Gamecocks will go for the sweep of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m., when they play a single game against the Eagles. JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under receive free admission to all JSU home games.
