AUBURN – Senior
Whitley Towns' name will be in the Jacksonville State record book, but her time in 1,500 meter run will change as she shattered her own record on Saturday at the Auburn Invitational.
Towns established a new JSU 1,500 meter record earlier in April at the Hilltopper Relays, for the second time this season, but set a new standard with a time of 4:30.29 on Saturday. The mark she set on April 9 was 4:38.98. The Boaz, Alabama distance runner finished seventh in the 1,500 invitational run. Samford's Karisa Nelson won the event after crossing the finish line in 4:19.98. Her mark in the 1,500 event is the second-best in the Ohio Valley Conference.
She would return to the track to compete in the 800 meter event and collected a silver finish with a time of 2:11.95. She was just shy of matching her program record in the same event. She owns JSU's 800 meter record of 2:10.62 which she set last weekend in Mobile, Alabama.
JSU had a solid day on the track in events as sophomore
Kayla Thompson turned in a season-best time of 24.48 in the 200 meter dash.
In field events, JSU turned in more season-best performances, led by sophomore
Aquanita Branford's season best in the javelin. Branford, from Hollywood, Alabama, had a toss of 125'5" to earn a top-10 finish. Sophomore
Courtney Bennett was a top-10 finisher in the shot put with a throw of 44'3".
Jax State will have one more meet to tune up for the 2016 OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships as it travels to Athens, Georgia to compete in the Georgia Invitational on April 29.
