JSU Places 116 Student-Athletes on OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll

OVC RELEASE

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State athletic programs placed a total of 116 student-athletes on the Ohio Valley Conference Commission's Honor Roll for the 2015-16 academic year, the league office announced on Wednesday.

To be listed, recipients must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade-point average and have been eligible throughout the competitive season in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport(s).

"I couldn't be more pleased with the hard work and dedication that our student-athletes showed last year in the classroom," said JSU Athletic Director Greg Seitz. "We hold our student-athletes to a very high standard on the field, in the classroom and in their communities. This is a great testament to their hard work in the classroom."

Football led the way for the Gamecocks with 26 student-athletes making the list, followed by soccer with 14. Women's track and field saw 12 members earn the honor, including five student-athletes which also competed in cross country. Softball and volleyball were the final two programs with double-digit recipients with 10 apiece.

"Our coaches and academic staff deserve credit for doing an outstanding job, and I can't say enough about the work by all of the staff in the University's Academic Center for Excellence, especially Todd Wilson," added Seitz. "Along with our athletic academic advisors of Tracy Broom and Mike Davis, our student-athletes are excelling academically, while also being successful on the fields of play."

The OVC set a record with 1,335 student-athletes from its 12 member institutions being listed on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The league also honored 27 student-athletes which compete in non-OVC championship sports such as gymnastics (Southeast Missouri), equestrian (UT Martin) and JSU's beach volleyball program.

"We are immensely proud of these students because they have not only achieved on the playing fi eld but also in the classroom," said OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche. "These students have demonstrated a sense of balance already in their lives which is important to life-long success. From the League perspective we are proud because we have had continual growth in the number of honorees which demonstrates the Conference's sustaining commitment to the broader student-athlete experience."

The OVC will announce the recipients of the Academic Medal of Honor, the Academic Achievement Award and the Team Academic Achievement Awards later this week.
