Jax State Falls to South Alabama in Trojan Classic Opener

TROY, Ala. – Jacksonville State knew this weekend's competition in the Trojan Classic, hosted by Troy University would be an early season test as the JSU soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to South Alabama on Friday afternoon.

The Jaguars were fueled by two early goals in the first half and added a pair in final 45 minutes to pick up their first win of the season and moved to 1-1-1.  The Gamecocks dropped to 1-2 on the season and will face Troy on Sunday to close out the weekend.

USA, a quick and athletic side, registered its first of two goals within the first 10 minutes of the contest in the 5th minute after Danielle Henley found the back of the net on the first shot attempt by the Jaguars.  USA's Rio Hardy connected on the first of two goals via a header with just under 10 minutes deep in to the contest to push USA's lead to 2-0.  The Jaguars would take the two-goal advantage into the halftime break.  Hardy's second goal was USA's fourth of the night as she finished off a cross from Chelsea Followwell in the 84th minute.

After USA added a third goal in the 72nd minute, Jax State took advantage of a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.  Senior Mackenzie Bellows recorded the goal, which was her first of the season and eighth of her career.

JSU's overall performance was noted by head coach Neil Macdonald as the best so far this season.  The Gamecocks finished with eight total shots, including four on goal chances.  The Jaguars were credited with 17 total shots in the contest.

Senior Nicola Dominikovich paced the JSU offense with a career-high four shots, while freshman Danielle Monroe added two in the opening half.

Jax State and long-time nemesis Troy will get underway on Sunday at 3 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available on JSUGamecockSports.com.
