Soccer Falls at SIU Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE – Southern Illinois Edwardsville scored a goal in each half and nursed that advantage the rest of the way to down Jacksonville State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium on the SIUE campus.

The Gamecocks wrap up the weekend in the state of Illinois with a split after posting a 1-0 result over Eastern Illinois on Friday.  JSU dropped to 5-8-2 overall and 2-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play.  With six points, next weekend's home set with Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State will be key for OVC Tournament positioning.  Friday's contest with EKU is set for 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field, while the MSU contest will get started at 1 p.m.  Admission is free to all JSU home soccer matches.

SIUE (6-6-2, 4-2-1 OVC) recorded the eventual game-winning goal in the 15th minute by Caroline Hoefert.  Hoefert controlled the pass from inside the box and struck it on to the lower right corner.  SIUE's Emily Grahl was credited with the assist on the scoring play.  The Cougars padded the lead in the 81st minute after Becca Jostes took multiple dribbles inside the box to send it to back of the net.

JSU was limited to a pair of shots in the first half and finished with three shots.  Sophomore Rachel Blanding had two of the Gamecocks' opportunities, while senior Kayla Thompson's shot was staved off by SIUE's Juli Rossi moments before the halftime intermission.  Blanding had a shot attempt in each 45-minute session.

SIUE controlled the match offensively with 12 total shots, including seven in the second half and were awarded five corner kick chances.  Hoefert turned in a match-high four shots, while Lindsey Fencel and MacKenzie Litzsinger had multiple shots for the Cougars.

The EKU and MSU matches will be available on the OVC Digital Network.
