Jacksonville State Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team begins its reign as Ohio Valley Conference champions Friday, Nov. 10 at Pete Mathews Coliseum with a matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
The season opening contest has been deemed Hometown Hero Night, as all active military, veterans, first responders, police and firemen and their families will be admitted free and recognized at halftime.
Jacksonville State is coming off a 78-41 tune-up win over Delta State in which all 12 Gamecocks dressed saw minutes on the floor and scored. Junior Christian Cunningham led the offense with 11 points, and the Gamecocks turned the ball over just 12 times. The JSU defense forced 23 turnovers of the Statesmen, and totaled what would have been a season-high 12 blocks in 2016-17.
Five newcomers are set to make their regular-season debuts Friday. Jason Burnell, Jamall Gregory, Maurice Dunlap, Cam Martin and Marlon Hunter each logged minutes for the first time as Gamecocks in last Thursday's exhibition against Delta State. Gregory, Burnell and Martin each tallied eight points in the 37-point victory.
Eight returners suit up Friday, including 2017 OVC Tournament MVP Malcolm Drumwright. The senior point guard had one of the greatest seasons in Jacksonville State's Division I history last year, totaling 439 points, 135 assists and 63 three-point field goals – all of which rank in the top-10 in the Gamecocks' Division I record book. Drumwright is just 43 points shy of becoming the 24th player in JSU history to join the 1,000-point club.
Cunningham and senior Norbertas Giga also return to the floor Friday to continue their dominance as two of the league's best forwards. Last season, both broke the Jacksonville State Division I record for rebounds in a season (Cunningham 275, Giga 267). Cunningham, a junior, ranks among the Gamecocks' all-time rebounders with 385 career boards, and Giga currently sits third in the program's D-I history with an 8.1 rebounding average.
