JSU Game Notes
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – With six Ohio Valley Conference games remaining in the regular season, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team prepares for its first meeting of the season against conference foe Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday.
Â
The Gamecocks (10-12, 3-7 OVC) made the 500-mile journey to Edwardsville for their second visit to The Prairie State during league play after traveling to Eastern Illinois earlier this season. Saturday marks just the eighth all-time meeting between JSU and SIUE as one of the newest series since the Cougars joined the OVC full-time in 2011.
Â
Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m., with the women's contest preceding the men. Video stream will be provided by the OVC Digital Network while live stats are available through JSUGamecockSports.com. Â
Â
JSU's only previous victory at SIUE's Vadalabene Center came in its last road meeting on New Year's Day 2015, 72-69. After head coach Rick Pietri's arrival, the Gamecocks reeled off three straight wins in the series, including the only postseason meeting during the 2014 OVC Tournament.
Â
Senior Briana Benson leads a trio of Gamecocks averaging double-digit scoring, just ahead of Lacey Buchanon (10.6) and Tyler Phelion (10.5). In conference games, Rayven Pearson and Tasha Magruder are averaging nearly seven points. On the defensive side, JSU leads the OVC in scoring defense holding opponents to under 64 points per game. Jax State is looking to finish top in that category in the conference for the third-straight season. Kelly Naughton, a senior from Elk Grove, Ill., who's started the last 12 games for Jax State, will play the final game in her home state.
Â
The Cougars sit at 5-5 in the conference standings, tied for fifth, and two games ahead of JSU. A win for JSU could pull the Gamecocks back into a top-eight seed and give them a tiebreaker over another potential bubble team. To finish the season, Jax State visits Belmont, unbeaten in league play, before playing three of its final four games back at Pete Mathews Coliseum.Â
