JACKSONVILLE – For the second consecutive year Jacksonville State and Georgia State played to a scoreless draw as the two sides battled at the JSU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Gamecocks finished the first full weekend at home with a 1-0-1 mark after topping Middle Tennessee on Friday evening. JSU moved to 2-1-1 overall and will now play its next five matches away from Jacksonville, beginning next weekend in Mobile, Alabama. Jax State's next home match will be Sunday, Sept. 17 against Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech. Last season, JSU and GSU played 110 minutes last season in Atlanta without a goal.
JSU and GSU have played 220 minutes without either program netting a goal, even though JSU had a plus-nine advantage in total shots and five great looks on goal. JSU finished with 18 total shots, while limiting the Panthers to just nine shots on the day. JSU looked to post a goal with 10 shots in the second half after holding GSU to three shots in the first half. While GSU was credited with nine shots, it nearly matched that total in corner kicks, but was unsuccessful in producing a result on a set piece.
Sophomore
Danielle Monroe, who had a pair of goals on Friday night, shared the team lead in total shots with four. Freshman
Kelly Snook, who made her first career start, had four chances as well. Senior
Claire Petersen had three total shots and two good looks on goal. Freshman
Chloe Doherty came off the bench to spark the Gamecocks offensively with three shots.
Senior goalkeeper
Caroline Robinson added another shutout to her career total with the blanking. She now has 11.5 career shutouts, ranking her third all-time at JSU. The Hendersonville, Tennessee native had a pair of stops.
The Gamecocks will begin the extended road trip on Friday, taking on in-state nemesis Troy on the opening day of the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile. JSU and the Trojans will start at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1. The Gamecocks wrap up the two-game weekend on Sunday against the Jaguars of South Alabama at 2:30 p.m.
