Soccer Drops OVC Opener at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – Jacksonville State dropped its Ohio Valley Conference opener with a 1-0 decision at UT Martin on Friday night at Skyhawk Field.

The Gamecocks, who wrapped up a five-match road trip, fell to 3-4-2 on the season and will look to bounce back from the loss on Sunday, hosting Tennessee Tech at the JSU Soccer Field.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.  Admission is free to all JSU home soccer matches.

UTM's (3-5-2) goal in the ninth minute was the difference even though the Gamecocks out-shot the home side 12-4 in the contest.  Alice Adams netted her first goal of the season after taking the ball out of a scrum at the top of the box and sent a high-arching shot over Caroline Robinson's head in to the right corner.

JSU had five of its shots in the opening half and had chances for the equalizer as three of the five opportunities came on goal.  The Gamecocks added seven shots in the second half and were led in the contest by sophomore Danielle Monroe.  Monroe finished with five total shots, including four on goal.  JSU nearly sent the game in to extra time with a goal in the final seconds, but a UTM defender cleared it behind keeper Erica Myers.  She tallied five saves in the shutout win.

Sophomore Cheyenne Carden had a pair of scoring chances, while Rachel Blanding came off the bench for two shots.  Adams led the Skyhawks with two strikes.

Tech (3-4, 0-1 OVC) opened OVC play with an overtime loss on the road at Southeast Missouri on Friday night.  Sunday's contest will be available on the OVC Digital Network.
