JSU's women's basketball team looks to respond after a tough 44-48 setback on the road last Saturday at Eastern Kentucky. The loss snapped JSU's three-game win streak, and places the Gamecocks in third place in the league standings at 6-2 just one game away from the midway point of the conference race.
The Gamecocks (12-7, 6-2 OVC) will look to continue the great success that has played out this season at Pete Mathews Coliseum. At home, JSU is 8-1 having won seven-straight games on its own floor since nationally-ranked Florida State handed Jax State its only home loss back in early November. The home streak of seven wins is the longest home winning streak since the 2003-04 campaign, and is just one win shy of matching the 1996-97 team for the longest home win streak in the program's Division I history with eight straight.
Junior Rayven Pearson enters with a team-high average of 9.9 rebounds and 9.2 points per game. JSU has four players averaging more than seven points per contest with seniors Tyler Phelion, Gretchen Morrison and freshman Taylor Hawks. Since beginning OVC play, Phelion has increased her average to more than 10 points, followed closely by Hawks at 9.8.
The defense continues to be driving point behind JSU as the Gamecocks possess a league-best scoring defense which allows just 56.6 points per game. The Gamecocks will be challenged in a big way on Thursday when the Skyhawks arrive. UTM scores more than 72 points per game, and has improved that mark closer to 75 points in conference games.
To continue its home court success, JSU will have to snap an even bigger streak on Thursday dating back to 2010. The Skyhawks have won the last nine meetings since JSU walked away with a 56-51 home victory on Feb. 11, 2010. Jax State still holds the all-time series lead at 18-16 after 34 meetings, however, 13 of those early contest came during both programs' Division II days from 1985-1990.
