JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team began the 2018 campaign by downing West Alabama 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Courts.
"What a great way to begin the season," head coach Andres Amores said. "Both of our teams played really well today, and I am proud of our effort. The season is early and we still have some work to do, but today's matches were promising starts."
The Gamecocks took four of the six singles points and swept the doubles point. The Tigers managed wins at No. 2 and No. 4, but the rest of the match was all JSU.
Newcomer Aljaz Kaplja topped UWA's Honorio Fernandez 6-3, 7-6 (3-0) in an exciting matchup at No. 1, while Joaquin Vallejo, Paolo Cucalon and Guillermo Agost each claimed wins in straight sets. Marc Roura and Pablo Caffarena took each of their matches to three sets depite coming up just short in the third frame.
The Gamecocks hit the road for a double-header Jan. 28, taking on both Alcorn State and Jackson State at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. JSU returns home Feb. 20 for a noon match against Kennesaw State.
