Gamecocks continue road trip at Penn State Monday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team continues its six-day, three-game road swing Monday with a matchup against reigning NIT champion Penn State.
The Gamecocks and Nittany Lions are set to meet for the first time Monday night at 6 p.m. at Bryce Jordan Center. It is the first of two game for JSU in the U.S. Regional of the Cancun Challenge.
Both teams opened the 2018-19 season on Friday. Jacksonville State dropped a 92-72 contest at in-state rival Samford, while Penn State earned an 87-72 home win over North Florida.
Despite a season-opening loss to the Bulldogs, Jacksonville State saw senior Christian Cunningham become the program's new career blocks leader. The 6-foot-7 forward swatted four shots Friday en route to passing former Gamecock Amadou Mbodji for the record. Cunningham, also the OVC's leading active shot-blocker, now has 165 career rejections.
JSU got off to a slow start at Pete Hanna Center, scoring just 28 first-half points, but found its groove just before the half. The Gamecocks scored 22 points in an eight-minute span, beginning just before the break and lasting five minutes into the second, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 19-point halftime deficit.
Penn State won its sixth consecutive game on Friday, dating back to the 2017-18 season. Junior Lamar Stevens' double-double helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 15-point win over North Florida in the first meeting between the two programs.
