JSU Handles Lipscomb in 58-46 Road Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jacksonville State earned its first road win in series history against Lipscomb on Saturday with a 58-46 victory inside Allen Arena.

The Gamecocks (2-1) held the Bisons (2-2) to just 29 percent shooting for the day, and scored 31 points off 26 turnovers to lead for more than 32 minutes of game action. JSU buried eight triples, led by Jayla Walker who was 3-0f-6 from long range to finish with 11 points.

Sophomore Taylor Hawks topped Walker with a team-high 17 points as the Gainesville, Ga., native, was an efficient 7-for-11 from the floor. Overall, eight Gamecocks reached the scoring column, with seven posting at least five points or more.

The two teams traded blows for most of the first quarter until Walker's three-pointer near the end of the opening period handed JSU an 11-9 lead that the Gamecocks would not relinquish. Another triple by Brianna Perry early in the second capped a 9-0 JSU run to make it 17-11. Closing in on halftime, a layup by Hawks made it a double-digit margin for the first time at 30-20. It was only Hawks' second basket as she added 13 of her 17 in the second half as JSU padded it's advantage.

The Gamecock defense held LU to just nine points in the third period, the same as the first, to break the game open with a 45-29 score heading into the final quarter. A triple from Hawks with eight minutes remaining in the fourth extended the lead to a game-high 17, but LU slowly chipped away made it back within single digits at eight with 1:17 to play following just the third three-pointer by the Bisons on the day.

After games in Florida, Texas and Tennessee to open the year, JSU will head out to California next week for Cal State – Northridge's Thanksgiving tournament. The Gamecocks will open play against Harvard on Friday, and will face either Washington State or host, CSUN, on Saturday.
