Gamecocks set for Wednesday contest at Wichita State
12/11/2018 7:53:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WICHITA, Kan. – The Jacksonville State men's basketball team meets with Wichita State for the first time in the program's history Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
The matchup with the American Athletic Conference foe is set to be televised locally on COX Yurview and streamed on ESPN3.
Despite never meeting, Jacksonville State is 1-0 against AAC opponents since the league's rebranding in 2014. The Gamecocks topped Tulsa 84-73 on Nov. 11, 2016 in Tulsa, Okla., to begin the 2016-17 season. It was head coach Ray Harper's debut and first win as the Gamecocks' head coach.
Harper is searching for his first win over the Shockers, holding an 0-1 coaching record against WSU. As head coach at Western Kentucky, Harper's Hilltoppers dropped a 66-49 decision to Wichita State on Nov. 11, 2013 – a Shockers' team that reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament the year prior.
The Gamecocks are looking to extend a winning streak that currently stands at five games. It is the longest winning streak under Harper and the longest for a JSU team since the 2014-15 squad won five in a row.
The catalyst for the Gamecocks' five-game winning streak has been senior forward Jason Burnell, who is averaging 16.4 points per game with 21 assists and 41 rebounds over the past five contests. He has totaled a team-leading 82 points along with six steals and six blocks since Jacksonville State's Nov. 20 win over Western Carolina in Cancun, Mexico.
Wichita State enters the game with a 4-4 record, coming off a tough 80-48 loss to Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. The Shocker offense features the AAC's leading scorer, Markis McDuffie, who joined WSU's 1,000-point club in the first half against the Sooners. McDuffie is averaging 19.5 points per game, scoring at least 14 in each of the past seven contests.
Wednesday's game in Wichita is the second of a three-game road stint for the Gamecocks. JSU wraps up the away series Dec. 15 at Evansville. Jacksonville State returns home Tuesday, Dec. 18 to take on North Alabama at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game will be the first at The Pete since hosting Belmont on Feb. 22, 2018 before the March 19 tornados ripped the roof from the facility.
