JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's basketball teams return to action Saturday afternoon at Pete Mathews Coliseum to host the last non-conference doubleheader before the start of Ohio Valley Conference play.
The JSU women begin the day with a 2 p.m. tip against longtime-rival Troy, followed by the men at 4 p.m. against Reinhardt University. Both games are set to broadcast live on ESPN+.
The Gamecock women look to return to the win column after falling to Miami University in its last outing on December 18, snapping a four-game win streak. JSU (6-4) welcomes a strong Troy (8-2) squad that's only lost one of its last nine games. Both teams own the distinction of having a "Power Five" victory over the same opponent in Ole Miss. For Troy, it was the Trojan's last game on December 19, while Jax State earned its road win in Oxford, Miss., on Dec. 2.
Saturday's matchup marks the 62nd all-time meeting in series history. The historic in-state rivals first met in 1975 as Division II foes, and have continued the series with 23 meetings as Division I members since 1995. However, it's been six years since the last matchup marking the longest hiatus since the series started. JSU has won the previous two contests in 2010 and 2011, but the Trojans still own a commanding series advantage with 39 wins to JSU's 22.
While the two schools haven't met since head coach Rick Pietri arrived in Jacksonville, Pietri still owns a successful record over the Trojans from his time in the Sun Belt Conference with South Alabama from 2000-2013. Pietri's 15-3 career record against Troy is his best mark against any one opponent.
Seniors Destiney Elliott and Rayven Pearson are the lone Gamecocks averaging double figures through 10 games with 12.7 and 10.9 points per game, respectively. Pearson has also notched five double-doubles this season as she leads the team with 9.1 boards per game.
JSU doesn't light up the scoreboard often, averaging under 60 points per game, but the Gamecocks have once again established their trademark defense that currently ranks 22nd best in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to just 54.4 points. That defense will get a good test on Saturday as the Trojans enter the contest averaging over 81 points per game, including putting up 92 against Ohio Valley Conference member Tennessee State in November.

The Jacksonville State men's basketball team takes on Reinhardt in its final non-conference tune-up of the season.
The Gamecocks (7-5) and Eagles (6-7) have met five times since 2004. All five games have been played at Pete Mathews Coliseum and all five have gone in the win's column for Jacksonville State.
Jacksonville State is coming off a hard-fought loss to West Virginia, dropping a 74-72 decision at WVU Coliseum to the Mountaineers. The game came down to the wire with Jason Burnell shooting the would-be game-winning 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining.
Despite the loss, senior Marlon Hunter scored a new career-high 26 points Dec. 22 at West Virginia. The guard was 12-for-22 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the free-throw line. His previous best was 23 at North Alabama on Dec. 1.
Jacksonville State's top-notch defense will be on display against a Reinhardt team that is averaging over 80 points per game. The JSU defense ranks 69th in the NCAA in scoring defense, allowing just 66.3 points per contest. Of the Gamecocks' 12 games played, opponents have scored more than 66 points in just six games.
In addition, the JSU defense is literally stealing the show on defense. The Gamecocks currently rank 36th in the nation for turnovers forced, totaling 201 through 12 games, at an average of 16.75 turnovers per game. Over half of those turnovers have come on steals with JSU ranking 23rd in the NCAA with 108 total steals. The Gamecocks are averaging 9.0 steals per game, good for 19th in the nation and second in the OVC.
Jamall Gregory owns 27 total steals – ranking 36th in the nation and first in the conference. His league-leading 2.25 steals per game are good for 31st in the nation.
