BEAUMONT, Texas – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season Saturday evening with a 4-2 loss to Lamar University on the road.
JSU split the long road trip, winning at Xavier of Louisiana Friday afternoon, but Lamar (1-4) proved to be too much for the undefeated Gamecocks (4-1) Saturday in the Lone Star State.
Jacksonville State took the doubles point thanks to the teams of Andres Gomez/Aljaz Kaplja and Pablo Caffarena/Joaquin Vallejo. Kaplja and Gomez won their set 6-4, while Caffarena and Vallejo claimed the point with a 6-3 set victory.
Vallejo defeated Lamar's Logan Powell in three sets (7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4) at No. 3, but it was the only individual win for the Gamecocks Saturday. JSU dropped four of the six singles competitions, while Gomez's match at No. 6 went unfinished.
The Gamecocks are back in action Feb. 17 in Montgomery, Ala., for the Alabama State Invitational. Jacksonville State returns home on Feb. 24 to host Lipscomb at 10 a.m.
