CHARLESTON, S.C. — Three errors, all in the third inning, led to a big frame for Charleston and did the Jacksonville State softball team in on Sunday.
The Cougars (18-11) fed off of the three miscues by the Gamecocks (11-14) and put together a 13-run inning that lifted them to a 13-1 win in the final game of their Charleston Invitational.
The big inning saw errors by JSU on the frame's first three batters and led to 13 runs that were unearned in the Gamecocks' runs allowed column. The inning saw 18 Cougars come to the plate, eight hits and four walks and put JSU too far behind on the scoreboard.
The Gamecocks did get a run in the top of the fifth, an inning that saw
Ryann Luna double to left field and then score on
Hayley Sims' double into the game in right center.
Emily Woodruff recorded an infield single in the inning, capping a 2-for-2 day for the Albertville, Ala., native at the plate. She ended a week that saw her hit .600 (9-for-15) over a five-game span that saw her notch two doubles and four RBI.
Faith Sims (7-6) suffered the loss in the circle for JSU on Sunday after allowing eight unearned runs on three hits and four walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Alexus Jimmerson surrendered the other five runs on three hits and two walks while recording one out. Nichole Rodriguez tossed the final 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four Cougars.
Summer Jenkins (6-5) earned the win for Charleston after limiting JSU to a run on five hits in five innings in the circle.
The Gamecocks will play a non-conference game at Western Kentucky on Thursday in Bowling Green, Ky., before opening Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday at UT Martin.
