
Men's Tennis Drops Midweek Match to Kennesaw State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team fell 4-3 on Wednesday, dropping just its second match of the season.
The Gamecocks (10-2) took the Owls (4-5) down to the wire with the match being decided by just one set. The loss was JSU's first suffered at home this season.
The day was off to a good start with Jacksonville State taking three of four sets in doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. Guillermo Agost and Andres Gomez won at No. 1 while Pablo Caffarena and Sergio Lizarraga dropped a close 7-6 set. Aljaz Kaplja and Paolo Cucalon claimed the deciding set 7-6 at No. 2 over KSU's Corey Smith and Manuel Castellanos to secure the match's first point.
Following their missed opportunity at the doubles point, the Owls went on a tear to take four of the six singles contests to claim the narrow win. Gomez and Caffarena salvaged wins at No. 6 and No. 2, respectively, while Kennesaw's Drew Lahey, Fermin Calvo Barcelo and Bryan Triana claimed wins at No. 5, 1 and 4 in order.
Tied 3-3, the match came down to the No. 3 contest between Joaquin Vallejo and KSU's Smith. Smith took the first set 7-5 and Vallejo won the second set 6-2. The third and deciding set went to Smith 7-5.
The Gamecocks' next test comes Saturday, March 10 at Chattanooga at 11 a.m. before the start of Ohio Valley Conference play on March 16 at Eastern Illinois.
