Men's Tennis Shuts out Tennessee State Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team blanked Tennessee State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Curry Tennis Complex to wrap up the regular season.
 
The Gamecocks (14-4, 4-2 OVC) ended the regular season at third place in the Ohio valley Conference standings, making them the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
 
JSU allowed just two set victories to the Tigers all afternoon with one coming in doubles play at No. 2. Despite the loss in the second doubles set, Andres Gomez and Guillermo Agost took the first 6-2, while Pablo Caffarena and Sergio Lizarraga claimed the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3.
 
Caffarena's singles competition at No. 2 reached three sets, but the other five Gamecock points were taken in straight sets. Aljaz Kaplja earned his eighth win at No. 1, and Paolo Cucalon extended his team-best winning streak to seven matches with a win over Pavle Popovic at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2).
 
Now 8-2 in his last 10 matches, Agost earned a win at No. 5, and Lizarraga took a victory over Kato Richardson (6-2, 6-2) at No. 6. Joaquin Vallejo picked up his team-high 12th win of the season with a defeat of Larry Slaon at No. 3 (6-0, 6-4).
 
Jacksonville State now turns its attention to the OVC Championships, set to begin Friday, April 20 at the Nashville Centennial Sportsplex. The 3-seeded Gamecocks will square off against 6-seeded Eastern Illinois at 8 a.m. in the first match of the day. The winner of the match will move on to play No. 2 Tennessee Tech at 8 a.m. in the semifinals on Saturday, followed by the championship match at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
