Box Score BIRMINGHAM – The Jacksonville State softball team lost a wild one in Birmingham on Tuesday night, when Samford rallied for an 11-10 win despite a four-RBI night from
Anna Chisolm.
In-state rivals the Gamecocks (17-17) and Bulldogs (12-26) went back-and-forth throughout the game, exchanging leads six times. It was homestanding Samford that took the final lead in the seventh on Ryan Brzozoski's two-run walk-off single that changed a one-run JSU lead into a Bulldog win.
Chisolm led a 14-hit attack for the Gamecocks with a two-run homer, a two-run double and four RBI, while sophomore
Ryann Luna also went 3-for-4 and belted her first career homer in the losing effort for JSU. Chisolm scored a team-high three runs.
Three other Gamecocks notched multiple hits in the game, with
Caitlyn Sapp,
Taylor Beshears and
Hayley Sims each picking up two.
Freshman
Nicole Rodriguez (1-2) suffered the tough-luck defeat out of the bullpen after allowing just two runs on two hits in her 2 and 2/3 innings of work. She entered a wild game and settled things down, but the first hot she allowed in over two innings was the game winner.
Taylor DeCelles (5-10) earned the win in relief, allowing three runs on four hits in three innings in the circle.
An RBI single from
Leila Chambers scored Beshears in the first and started the scoring for both teams, but a Brzozoski sac fly tied it in the home half. The second saw the Gamecocks pull out to a 4-1 lead, thanks to Luna's homer, a shot to left, and Chisolm's two-run blast to center.
Samford took its first lead of the game with a four-run third, only to watch the Gamecocks answer with three in the fourth on an
Alexus Jimmerson RBI double, a
Hayley Sims RBI single and a wild pitch that allowed Chambers to score and put JSU back on top 7-5.
That lead was short-lived, thanks to Kelsey Royalty's three-run homer in the home half of the fourth that put Samford up 8-7.
Chisolm doubled in two more in the fifth and scored on Beshears' triple that capped a three-run JSU fifth and posted a 10-8 JSU lead on the board.
Samford got one back in the fifth and the two teams put up zeroes until the Bulldogs' seventh-inning game winner.
The Gamecocks will return to action on Friday, when they host Belmont in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Choccolocco Park in Oxford. The twinbill, originally scheduled for Saturday, will start at 3 p.m. and will be streamed at www.ovcdigitalnetwork.com.
