Softball Sweeps Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga.—Jax State racked up 14 hits, eight with two outs in an 11-3 win in six innings at Kennesaw State on Sunday for their fourth Conference USA weekend series sweep of the season.

The Gamecocks (31-12, 16-2 CUSA) stormed out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of extra-base hits in the top of the first. Morgan Nowakowski ripped a ball to the center field wall that bounced out of the defender's glove resulting in a triple, then scored on Amber Reed's RBI single.

Reed has now reached base successfully in 21 consecutive games. She finished the day 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and finished the weekend series 5-for-8 with four runs scored.

After Kailey Martin walked, Makalyn Kyser hit a ball to the right field wall that was dropped as the defender collided with the wall resulting in a two-run double. Ashley Phillips then drove home Kyser with a single to left.

Kyser then eliminated a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning when she attempted to steal second for the third out. Freshman pitcher Makenna Moore retired the next nine batters she faced before a one-out double in the fourth.

Moore improved to 13-1 on the season, allowing three earned on four hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks over five innings of work. MacKinley Portillo recorded the final three outs in the sixth.

Phillips picked up her second RBI of the game with two outs in the third on a bloop single in shallow right field to bring home Reed who singled to lead off the inning on a sharply hit ball down the third base line. A fielding error allowed Jaci Underwood to reach and Aria Davis, who was hit by a pitch, to score.

Phillips finished 2-for-2.

Haleigh Cushingberry then reached on a bunt single to load the bases for Emma Elrod who cleared them with a double to left field to put the Gamecocks up 9-0. Elrod's double was the fifth two-out hit of the game for Jax State and the sixth with runners in scoring position.

Elrod finished 2-for-3 for her team-leading 17th multi-hit game.

Maddie Mayo made it 10-0 with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Davis who led off the inning with a single to first base.

The Owls (7-21, 3-15 CUSA) got on the board with a two-out, two-run homer to right in the bottom of the fourth and added a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.

Nowakowski was the fourth Gamecock with two hits, picking up a two-out single through the right side of the infield in the fifth, and Davis became the sixth with a single off the pitcher's foot in the sixth. She came around to score on a two-out error by the third baseman to bring the run-rule back into play.

Jax State will continue their nine-game road trip this weekend at Missouri State starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
