Gamecocks Sweep Tennessee State in OVC Softball Doubleheader

OXFORD - Tha Jacksonville State softball team swept its Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with Tennessee State at Choccolocco Park on Sunday, claiming a 7-2 win the opener and a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Gamecocks jumped on the Tigers in the first inning. They scored five runs, all with two outs, to jump to an early 5-0 lead.

A two-run Amber Jones single started the scoring and was followed by a two-run double from Anna Snider that landed at the base of the wall in straightaway center. Ryann Luna finished the scoring by driving in Snider with her single up the middle.

TSU got one back in the second and another in the third before Alexus Jimmerson put the final 7-2 score on the board with her two-run blast to right in the home half of the fourth.

While Jimmerson was driving in the final runs of the game from the plate, she was controlling the game in relief from the circle. The Jackson, Tenn., native tossed to final five innings of the game and allowed just one unearned run on four hits to earn the win and improve to 5-3 on the season. She struck out four and walked just one.

Snider led JSU's 10-hit attack with a 2-for-3 outing that included her two-run double. She was the only JSU player with multiple hits in a game that saw everyone in the starting lineup record at least one base hit.

Tori Hart (0-9) suffered the loss in the circle for TSU, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and three walks in her complete game effort.

In the nightcap, freshman Nicole Rodriguez struck out 10 Tiger batters in her complete game win, while Anna Chisolm drove in two runs in her 2-for-4 effort at the plate.

JSU struck early again, getting one run in the first off a Jimmerson sac fly that allowed Caitlyn Sapp to score from third and staked the Gamecocks to a quick 1-0 lead.

The Gamecocks extended that lead in the second with three more runs. Woodruff started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle that plated Hannahstaysia Weaver and then scored on Sapp's triple into the right center gap. Chisolm finished the frame with a grounder to second that allowed Sapp to score and give JSU a 4-0 lead.

Chisolm drove in another JSU run in the fourth on a two-out single through the right side that plated Woodruff after she was hit by a pitch and then advanced to third on a Tiger error.

The Tigers got on the board in the top of the sixth, their first threat against freshman starter Nicole Rodriguez. Back-to-back hits from Katie Schneider and Whitney Ennis thwarted Rodriguez' attempt at a shutout and cut JSU's lead to 5-1. They would get one more in the seventh, but Rodriguez got out of it with her second win of the season, striking out 10 in the process.

Lauren Powell tossed all six frames for TSU, allowing five runs, just two earned, on seven hits. She struck out four and didn't issue a walk.

The Gamecocks return to the road on Saturday, when they travel to Clarksville, Tenn., for a doubleheader at Austin Peay. The twinbill will begin at 1 p.m.
