OXFORD, Ala. – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team defeated Southeast Missouri 4-3 on Sunday at the Oxford Tennis Complex to wrap up its home schedule with a win.
Sophomore Malin Buechner's match at No. 3 proved to be the decider in the Gamecocks' one-point victory Sunday afternoon. Tied 3-3 with just her match remaining, Buechner squared off against SEMO's Isabella Krupa. In straight sets, the Hilden, Germany native topped Krupa 6-3 in the first frame and won an exciting 7-6 second set to secure the fourth OVC win of the season for Jacksonville State.
Southeast Missouri (4-12, 1-6 OVC) took the first point of the morning with a 2-1 win in doubles action. Genevie Ulanday and Elena Tendero picked up a 6-1 set win, but SEMO won at No. 2 and No. 3 to claim the point.
The Redhawks went up 2-0 with Maya Thompson's win at No. 4 over Tendero, but the Gamecocks (11-4, 4-3 OVC) struck back with three wins back-to-back with Diana Monsalve, Alba Conejero and Ulanday winning at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 1, consecutively. SEMO's Kseniya Zonova tied the match 3-3 with a two-set win over Alessia Locati at No. 2 just prior to Buechner's match-winning contest.
Jacksonville State hits the road for its final two matches of the season, taking on Belmont April 13 at 2 p.m. and Tennessee State the following day at 2 p.m., as well. Both matches are set to take place in Nashville, Tenn.
