OXFORD – The Jacksonville State softball team fell 4-0 to UAB in its final midweek game of the 2018 season on Wednesday night at Choccolocco Park.
The Blazers (23-29-1) scored a run in the first inning and never looked back as the Gamecocks (27-23) struggled to get anything going against UAB starter Claire Blount.
Blount limited the JSU bats to three hits in seven shutout innings of work. She struck out six JSU batters and didn't issue a walk in improving to 8-12 on the season. JSU starter
Faith Sims (17-9) suffered the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Freshman
Nicole Rodriguez retired the side in her one inning of relief work for the Gamecocks.
Taylor Beshears,
Hayley Sims and
Anna Snider scattered JSU's three hits, all singles.
Natalie Erwin led the Blazers with a 2-for-4 showing that saw her hit a solo homer in the fifth. She scored three of the Blazers' four runs.
The Gamecocks wrap up the regular season on Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Tennessee Tech at Choccolocco Park. It will be Senior Day for the JSU Softball team, who will honor its four senior players –
Leila Chambers,
Taylor Rogers,
Caitlyn Sapp and
Emily Woodruff – in a pregame ceremony. JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under receive free admission.
