MONTGOMERY – Jacksonville State rallied twice on Saturday at the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament, downing Alabama A&M on a walk-off
Anna Chisolm homer and falling to Western Carolina in extras.
Chisolm hit her second game winning homer in as many games in a 9-6 win over the Bulldogs, but the Gamecocks (5-3) lost an 8-6 game to the Catamounts in eight innings to close the day.
The Gamecocks used their come-from-behind magic in the first game of the day, erasing a three-run deficit in the seventh inning to pull off a walk-off, 9-6 win over Alabama A&M.
The Bulldogs managed two runs in the first, one in the second and three in the fifth to open their 6-3 lead.
Lex Hull belted a three-run homer in the first inning to account for all of JSU's offense in the first six innings. The bats came to life in the seventh, however. A
Taylor Beshears double sandwiched between walks to
Savannah Sudduth and Hull loaded the bases with no outs to get it started.
Karsen Mosley drew a bases loaded walk to make it a two-run game, and then an
Alexus Jimmerson sac fly cut the AAMU lead to 6-5. Freshman
Anna Hood delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to tie the game, and Chisolm delivered a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left to walk JSU off with a 9-6 win.
It was Chisolm's second game-winning homer in as many games after the senior from St. Louis, Mo., defeated North Alabama with an eighth-inning blast on Friday.
Sophomore
Nicole Rodriguez (1-1) earned the win in relief for JSU, tossing 2 and 2/3 scoreless frames that saw her strike out three and allow just three hits. She held the Bulldogs in check after starter
Kirsten Titus surrendered four runs on five hits and
Macy Bearden surrendered two on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Lauren Hayden suffered the loss for the Bulldogs. She allowed six runs on four hits and five walks in 2 and 2/3 innings of relief. Starter Alyssa Lopez went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.
For the JSU offense, eight players scattered eight hits, with Hull and Chisolm leading the way with their three-run blasts.
In the nightcap, a four-run Western Carolina first and another run in the second put the Gamecocks in an early 5-0 hole. JSU clawed back with two in the second on an RBI triple from
Hayley Sims and an RBI single from Chisolm
A Western Carolina homer in the fourth made it a 6-2 game, a score that held until JSU's late rally started in the sixth.
Sidney Wagnon got it started with an RBI double to left center, and then a Catamount error scored another and brought the Gamecocks within two runs.
Wagnon started the scoring in the seventh with an RBI single, and then a
Taylor Beshears sac fly tied the game and sent it into extras.
WCU took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule, using it to spark two eighth inning runs, while the Gamecocks couldn't push one across before dropping the game 8-6.
Kayla Brewer threw the first six innings for WCU, but Kinsey Liscio grabbed the win in relief after allowing just one hit and three walks in two innings.
Rodriguez suffered the loss in relief, giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits and four free passes in six frames of work.
JSU will wrap up the weekend on Sunday against Fort Wayne at 9 a.m. CT.
