JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State men's basketball rising senior Ty Hudson recently spent a few days of his summer overseas in China with Sports Reach USA.
Â
The Gamecocks' guard made just his second trip outside the United States as part of the Christian ministry group to play in four games against the Spanish national team, visit local families and children, and volunteer in the community.
Â
"The experience of being in a new place and interacting with new people was my biggest takeaway," Hudson said. "There were some people who had never seen an American before, so they were pulling out their phones and taking pictures of us. I felt like a superstar."
Â
While in China, Hudson's team also visited two high schools and played games with the students between his own games.
Â
"Sometimes we didn't even play basketball at the high schools," Hudson said. "Sometimes we were playing soccer or some other sport. It was a lot of fun."
Â
Hudson is the third Gamecock to compete with Sports Reach USA in as many years. Malcolm Drumwright visited China with the group in 2017, while Christian Cunningham competed in Belize in 2018.
Â
Hudson is one of just two returning seniors for Jacksonville State in 2018-19. The guard from Baton Rouge, La., returns as JSU's leading scorer with 323 points from the season prior and was one of four Gamecocks to play in all 33 games last year.
Â
The cultural exchange trip was sponsored by Sports Reach USA. Sports Reach, based in Louisville, Ky., was founded in 1986 and has sponsored evangelical athletic trips to various countries for more than 30 years. Through athletics, Sports Reach allows its participants the opportunity to use their talents to minister and connect with different cultures across the globe. For more information on Sports Reach, click here.
