HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Jacksonville State had its first real travel of the season over the weekend competing in Marshal University's Thundering Herd Invitational.

The Gamecocks came home seventh as a team in their first team-scored indoor event of the year. Fellow Ohio Valley Conference member, Austin Peay, won the event, followed by host Marshall. JSU edged Winthrop, Wright State and Morehead State inside the top 10.

Plenty of personal bests went down in West Virginia, starting with the early throwing events. On the first day of competition four Gamecocks PBs were set between the triple jump and the weight throw. Freshman Kha'Myah Townsend's fifth-place triple jump of 11.16 meters stands as the seventh-best distance in the OVC this year.

A trio of Gamecocks set new personal marks in the weight throw led by Adrian Rock 15.93 meters to finish third. Freshmen London Shaw (13.16m) and Kirsen Gardner (12.08m) followed Rock in seventh and 13th, respectively. Rock and Shaw would return the following day to finish back-to-back in fifth and sixth in the shot put event.

Also in the field, senior Madison Rollins paced Jax State in the high jump with a seventh-place spot clearing 1.56 meters or 5-feet-1¼ inches. Meanwhile, Casey Phelan notched her third-straight top five to begin the year going over 3.57 meters in the pole vault.

In the lanes, Ashton Coats turned in a strong sixth-place time in the finals of the 60m hurdles at 9.14 seconds. Five of the eight spots in the finals race were held by host Marshall. It set a new PB for Coats and is a top 10 time currently in the OVC. Tylynn Register just missed qualifying for the finals with a 9.30 clock in the prelims.

JSU scored several top 20 times in the 400 meter race led by Leandra Custodio in 16th at 1:00.11. She was followed by Register in 18th, and Uriah James in 20th. In the 800, Emily Sorrell posted a 2:25.03 just outside the top 10 and ahead of freshman Elizabeth Wetmore at 2:27.05. Wetmore also ran 15th in the mile run.

JSU will have a weekend break before heading to Columbia, S.C., for the South Carolina Invitational.
