JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team is set to open league play within the Ohio Valley Conference on Sunday, visiting Tennessee Tech.
Â
The Gamecocks (2-1) are coming off a loss at Georgia on Wednesday night, which followed strong back-to-back home wins to begin the year. The Golden Eagles (0-1) just opened their season on Friday with a setback to Chattanooga. TTU's program was forced to shutdown for several weeks to begin the season due to Covid-19 safety protocols. The league-opener between these two teams was set to be played on Dec. 3 in Jacksonville, but that matchup has since been postponed to January 25, when TTU will now make the return trip.
Â
The game will mark the 36th time the two programs have met and while TTU leads the series, 23-12, the Gamecocks are 9-6 under head coach Rick Pietri, and will be looking for their third win in a row after sweeping the series last year.
Â
Still early for both programs, but JSU has seen a strong start from several individuals. Team scoring leader Yamia Johnson has posted a team-high 16 points twice so far, including earlier in the week at Georgia. Meanwhile, newcomers Keiara Griffin and Imari Martin have also reached double figures in the early going and Kennedy Gavin posted a career-best 10 rebounds in her debut. The new talent mixed with veterans Jessie Day, Taylor Hawks and Kiana Johnson look to give Jax State a boost during this unique 20-game conference season.
Â
Sunday's game is set for 1 p.m. streaming on ESPN+ and carried by the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris on the call.
