JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's basketball team will square-off against in-state opponent Samford at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Â
It will be the opening portion of the first men's and women's basketball doubleheader of the season, as the Gamecock men follow the contest with a matchup against Tennessee Tech. For the ladies, JSU looks to get back on track in the friendly confines of The Pete. JSU (2-2) opened the year with back-to-back wins at home, before hitting the road for setbacks to Georgia and Tennessee Tech in the OVC opener. Â
Â
The visiting Bulldogs (1-5) enter with a less-than-ideal record, but arrive battle-tested better than any other program in the country after opening games against Alabama, Auburn, Indiana and No. 9 Kentucky on Sunday.
Â
The two schools have met on 32 previous occasions since SU started its program in 1998. Both were members of the TAAC, which transitioned into the Atlantic Sun Conference, at that time. In 2003, they remained conference rivals simultaneously joining the OVC. Though Samford left the league in 2008, the two teams have met on the hardwood seven other times in non-conference action. Samford leads the series 18-14.
Â
The most recent matchup came on Nov. 24, 2015, a 50-39 loss for JSU at home. The Gamecocks' last win came the year prior in 2014 in Homewood, 60-54.
Â
Junior Yamia Johnson has been the offensive star to begin the year for JSU. The Lexington, S.C., native, is averaging 17 points, and coming off a season-high 24 points at TTU in Sunday's setback. Senior Taylor Hawks and recent OVC Newcomer of the Week Imari Martin each average seven points apiece.
Â
On the boards, senior Jessie Day has collected 30 rebounds to begin the season, while sophomore Winnie Kuimi has 20. The Gamecock defense has limited opponents to just 63 points per game.
Â
Wednesday's game will stream on ESPN+ at 4:30 p.m. and "The Voice" Mike Parris will have the radio call across affiliate stations of the Gamecock Sports Network.
