JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team returns to Ohio Valley Conference play on Wednesday, hosting UT Martin in the final contest of the 2020 calendar year.
Â
The Gamecocks (3-2, 0-1 OVC) will face the Skyhawks (2-1, 1-0 OVC) at 4 p.m. inside Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game will broadcast on ESPN+ and Mike Parris will have the radio call across the Gamecock Sports Network.
Â
It will mark the 39th all-time meeting between the two schools, dating back to a 1983 Gulf South Conference tournament game while both programs were Division II. UT Martin leads the series 21-17, currently riding a 13-game winning streak that goes back to 2010.
Â
While JSU will have to stop the OVC Preseason Player of the Year and current league leader in scoring with Chelsey Perry, the Gamecocks will counter with an improved offensive game of their own led by junior Yamia Johnson who ranks sixth in the OVC in scoring.
Â
In an effort to snap the drought against UT Martin, JSU aims to keep a couple of recent positive streaks alive. The Gamecocks will go for their fourth-consecutive win in OVC home openers after winning such matchups the last three years. Also, a perfect 3-0 at home to begin the season, JSU tries for a seventh-straight home win going back to last year.
Â
JSU is coming off a 63-46 win over Samford on Dec. 16, where a fourth-quarter 14-0 run allowed Jax State to pull away from its in-state rival. A Dec. 21 contest at Ole Miss was canceled at the last minute due to testing protocols, wiping away JSU's final non-conference game.
Â
Looking ahead, JSU will also not be traveling to SIUE this weekend for a scheduled road game as the Cougars have been forced to postpone a couple of league games due to Covid-19 testing protocols. Updates on rescheduling will be announced at a later date.
