BIRMINGHAM – Jacksonville State wrapped up the indoor portion of its schedule with the conclusion of the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference indoor championships on Thursday.
Â
The Gamecocks tied SIU-Edwardsville for ninth overall in the team standings. Austin Peay won the team title by one point over Murray State.
Â
"Our ladies turned in several career and season bests," said head coach Steve Ray. "But we just absolutely were hurt with some injuries at key point scorers, and thus, finished a few positions below what we were shooting for."
Â
After qualifying for the finals with a career-best 8.98 time in the 60 meter hurdles, sophomore Ashton Coats retained her seeding in the finals with a 9.23 time to score seventh overall. Junior Tylynn Register wasn't far from the qualigying mark with a 9.74 run in the prelims.
Â
Coats also joined JSU's 4x400 squad along with senior Emily Sorrell, Jahleah Harris and Leandra Custodio. The team finished less than a second behind Southeast Missouri for seventh.
Â
Sorrell also ran a 2:21.32 in the 800 in her final indoor competition, while freshman Elizabeth Wetmore clocked in at 5:32.32 in the mile event.
Â
Following Madison Rollins' seventh-place spot in the high jump on the first day of competition, JSU's field events looked to provide a boost for day two's scoring before the injury bug bit.
Â
Sophomore Casey Phelan led the final day tying for fourth in the pole vault after clearing 3.59 meters to match Austin Peay's Morgan Bradley. In the long jump, Harris just missed tallying points with a ninth-place finish with a jump of 4.95 meters.
Â
In the throws, sophomore Adrian Rock secured a pair of personal bests with tosses of 12.23 meters in the shot put and 16.19 meters in the weight to scored eighth and earn another point for JSU. Freshman London Shaw was just behind Rock in the shot put with a throw of 12.21 meters in her first OVC championship.
Â
In the indoor pentathlon, senior Baylee Porch was on pace to challenge for the event win before having to withdraw for injury. Her high jump portion was the second-best height reaching 1.61 meters.
Â
JSU now moves to the outdoor portion of the 2020 schedule where the Gamecocks historically score higher with the additions of more events such as the javelin and others.
