JACKSONVILLE – For the second time in a week, the Jacksonville State baseball team has been picked as the favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference as Perfect Game, another web-bases media outlet that cover college baseball, released its OVC preview on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Jax State was pegged to win the league by D1Baseball.com. The OVC's official predicted order of finish and the preseason All-OVC team from the league office will be announced on Friday morning.
Perfect Game also named its preseason all-conference team with the preview and listed three Gamecocks on the preseason club, highlighted by sophomore pitcher Isaiah Magwood, who was tabbed the pitcher of the year. PG also gave notice to senior Alex Webb and junior Cole Frederick. Webb was penciled in for the catcher's spot, while Frederick claimed third base.Â
Magwood, from Hazel Green, Ala., finished his freshman campaign with three wins in his last four starts on the mound. His outing against Austin Peay in the OVC Baseball Tournament sent JSU to the finals of the tournament. He went 6.2 innings and posted eight strikeouts against APSU. Magwood scattered seven hits and allowed two runs in the semifinal appearance. Magwood started JSU's contest in the NCAA Oxford Regional against Illinois.
Webb, who has garnered preseason accolades as a Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-American selection, finished his first season as a Gamecock hitting .304 and delivering 57 RBI. The Columbia, Tennessee-native was an All-OVC First Team selection and named the OVC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Frederick was also an All-OVC performer after hitting .287 on the season and posted 26 extra base hits. He carried the strong finish as a sophomore into the summer baseball circuit as he won the New England Collegiate Baseball League batting title with a .396 clip at the plate.
Jax State opens the 2020 campaign Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on Friday, 14 at 3 p.m. against Southeastern Conference foe Missouri. The season-opening series will continue through the weekend with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and closing out the weekend on Sunday at 12 p.m.
