JACKSONVILLE – Looking to continue their winning ways, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team returns home to Pete Mathews Coliseum to host Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
Â
The Gamecocks (6-2, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) have matched the best Division I start in program history, and with a win over the Lady Tigers (0-7, 0-5 OVC) would stand alone with that distinction.
Â
In addition to a four-game winning streak, JSU enters Thursday's matchup with confidence having won the last seven meetings between the two schools. In the eight seasons under Rick Pietri, JSU is 11-5 versus TSU.
Â
Junior Yamia Johnson was held below 10 points for the first time all season in JSU's win at Morehead State on Saturday, but the Lexington, S.C., native, remains the team leader in scoring at 14.8 points per game. Senior Taylor Hawks is also averaging double figures at 10.9, while she chases the career 1,000-point mark at JSU. The offense as a whole has scored 70 or more on four occasions, and is coming off a 69-56 road win at Morehead State.
Â
Senior Kiana Johnson registered back-to-back double-digit games last weekend, while sophomore Nekiyah Thompson is fresh off a career-best 16-point effort against the Eagles. On the defensive side, JSU is limiting opponents to fewer than 60 points on average while shooting .363 from the floor. Senior Jessie Day leads the Gamecocks on the boards with 51 rebounds on the year, followed by freshman Keiara Griffin with 39, Y. Johnson at 38 and newcomer Kennedy Gavin with 35.
Â
Thursday's 4:30 tipoff inside The Pete will mark the 39 th meeting between the two teams with JSU holding a 22-16 series advantage. The game broadcast on ESPN+ and will be carried over the air on the Gamecock Sports Network.
Â
Following TSU, the Gamecocks were scheduled to host Belmont on Saturday but that contest has been postponed due to Covid-19 protocols. Further updates regarding rescheduled games and more can be found on the team's official social media accounts on twitter and Instagram by search "JSUGamecocksWBB".
