JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team embarks on its first conference road trip of 2021, heading to the Bluegrass State to meet Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State.
Â
JSU (4-2, 1-1 OVC) is off to a strong start for the season. The Gamecocks are a perfect 4-0 at home and coming off an upset victory over the league's preseason favorite, UT Martin, last Wednesday. Junior Yamia Johnson's team-high 16.7 scoring average ranks fifth in the conference. Meanwhile, the staple of JSU's play in past years, the defense, remains on par as Jax State is first in the OVC in scoring defense as opponents shoot just 36-percent against JSU.
Â
Behind Johnson, junior Imari Martin, coming off her second OVC Newcomer of the Week honor, and senior Taylor Hawks each average more than nine points per game. Johnson is second on the team in rebounding behind senior Jessie Day with 34 boards so far. Freshman Keiara Griffin has 29, while sophomore Winnie Kuimi has 27.
Â
Searching for its first road win of the season, JSU heads to EKU (4-4, 1-1) and McBrayer Arena, where last year the Gamecocks held the Colonels to just 33 points, the lowest total allowed to any league member since joining the OVC in 2003-04. Thursday's matchup will be the 37th meeting in the series. EKU leads the series, 19-17, but the Gamecocks have won 11 of the last 14 under head coach Rick Pietri.
Â
Thursday's contest at EKU is set for 5 p.m. EST/4 CST and will broadcast on ESPN+. Mike Parris will have the radio call over the Gamecock Sports Network.
Â
On Saturday, JSU continues the weekend with a visit to Morehead State at noon Eastern Time.
