JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University volleyball team defeated Bellarmine 3-0 on Friday night in Pete Mathews Coliseum marking the 14
th sweep of the season as senior setter
Lexie Libs recorded her 4,000
th career assist.
"[Lexie] is unbelievable. I can't say enough about her. Not only is she a tremendous setter, but you put together her leadership, her fight, her determination, her heart, how smart she is, and I wouldn't trade her for any setter in the country," said Head Coach
Todd Garvey. "I think she does a fantastic job, and we are definitely going to miss having her. She is like family to me; I've known her since she has been 12 years old and it's awesome to see her get that great achievement."
JSU improved to 20-5 on the season and 10-2 in the ASUN with the win. Bellarmine dropped to 6-18 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
Libs needed just nine assists heading into Friday's match to reach the 4,000 milestone. She finished the match with 41. Libs is just the fourth Gamecock to eclipse the 4,000-kill mark and first do to so since 2010. She is currently in the top-10 of active players in the NCAA among career assists.
"She is like the Tom Brady of our team. She can just be a great leader, set the tone, battle no matter what the circumstances are she is going to come out and play her hardest from start to finish and I think that is contagious to the team," added Garvey. "Her being here is tremendous as far as our success over the past four years."
In addition to Libs' team-leading performance, seniors
Katie Montgomery and Lena Kinderman each led the squad in kills with 10.
Sadie Brown added five kills on a 1.000 hitting percentage. As a team, the Gamecocks hit .336 while the visitors posted a .117 percentage.
"I thought we did some really good things offensively. Lena and Katie had great nights and then
Sadie Brown came in and hit really well too," said Garvey. "I thought those three did awesome offensively tonight, including Zoe. We have a lot of weapons and its fun to have that many weapons with good serve receive and a good setter."
JSU was dominant from the beginning in the first set.
Kylee Quigley recorded her first kill of the match, giving the Gamecocks a 7-1 lead and forcing a Bellarmine timeout. Up 12-6, JSU further extended the lead following a 5-0 run to push the advantage to 10, 16-6. Kindermann pushed the lead to 12, 19-7, forcing Bellarmine's second timeout of the match. Following the timeout, JSU closed the set on an 8-0 run, capped with a kill from
Kaylie Milton, to win 25-9.
After battling with the Knights early in the second set,
Zoe Gonzales put JSU up seven, 18-11 with a kill. Bellarmine cut the lead to three, 20-23, following back-to-back Gamecock errors. An ensuing kill from Montgomery gave JSU set point before Brown's kill secured the set win, 25-20.
JSU once again battled with Bellarmine to begin the third, much like the second. A block from Kindermann and Brown gave JSU a six-point lead, 18-12, midway through. Bellarmine cut the lead to three, 17-20. JSU responded with a 5-1 run to close out the final set, 25-18, capped with an ace from Montgomery, to conclude the sweep.
The Gamecocks return to action tomorrow, Oct. 30 to take on Eastern Kentucky at 4:30 p.m. Senior's
