Gamecocks Take Down UCA 3-0 in 17th Sweep of the Season

JACKSONVILLE- The Jacksonville State University Volleyball team improved to 23-5 on the season with a 3-0 sweep over Central Arkansas Friday night. The 23rd win of the season marks the most since 2017 as the Gamecocks are just one win away from tying the most regular seasons wins all-time of 24 set during the 2009 season.

The road win marked the fourth straight win for the side and improved their ASUN record to 14-2. JSU clinched the No. 1 seed in the West Division last week against North Alabama, winning 3-1.

"I thought we did a nice job tonight of playing in a tough environment and coming out with the win," said Head Coach Todd Garvey.

JSU battled back-and-forth with the Sugar Bears in the first set before ultimately pulling away 25-19. A dominant 25-10 win in the second and a 27-25 nail-biting win in the third gave the Gamecocks their 17th sweep of the season. JSU led 23-14 late in the third set but a 9-1 run from UCA cut the lead to one, 24-23. Another two points from the Sugar Bears put JSU behind 25-24 but kills from Saide Brown and Taylor Thomas pushed the Gamecocks back to a one-point lead, 26-25. A UCA attack error gave Jax State the win, 27-25, completing the 3-0 sweep.

Serving was a contributing factor in the win as the Gamecocks totaled 11 aces, tying the season-high set against Eastern Kentucky. Erin Carmichael recorded three in the match to lead the team, just one shy of her career high. Kylee Quigley, Katie Montgomery and Brooklyn Schiffli each added two – a career-high for Schiffli. Freshman Taylor Thomas recorded the first service ace of her JSU career and Lexie Libs added one as well.

The Gamecocks hit .297 in the match marking the 14th mark over .290 on the season. Lena Kindermann led the squad with a .524 clip on 13 kills and 21 attacks. Addie Halverson added nine kills with a.500 hit percentage. Senior setter Lexie Libs recorded 32 assists and added five digs in the match while Schiffli led the team in digs with eight.

"Lena and Addie had great nights offensively," added Garvey. "I thought we served and blocked really well which is awesome to see because those are two areas we have been focusing on in practice."

The Gamecocks recorded `13 total blocks in the match, led by Montgomery with three. UCA recorded 17 total blocks.

JSU will close out the regular season against Lipscomb on Sunday in Nashville, Tennessee at 2 p.m. Fans can watch live on EPSN+ and follow live stats at JSUGamecocksports.com.
