FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Jacksonville State University Volleyball team is moving on to the ASUN Conference Tournament Semifinals following a 3-0 sweep over Stetson behind a career-day from senior
Katie Montgomery.
The Gamecocks earned its first ASUN Tournament win in program history, defeating Stetson, and improved to 24-6 on the season. With the win JSU advances to the conference tournament semifinals for the fourth consecutive season, which includes three with the OVC in previous seasons.
Montgomery totaled a career-high 17 kills on a .517 clip and added six blocks to lead the Gamecocks in the quarterfinal win Thursday afternoon. Along with Montgomery, seniors
Lena Kindermann and
Addie Halverson also totaled double-digit kills with 10 each.
Back-to-back attack errors for Stetson, capped a 3-0 run and put the Gamecocks up 15-12 in the first. A kill from
Lena Kindermann and another Stetson error pushed JSU's lead to five, 22-17. JSU closed out the first set on a 3-0 run, winning 25-18, following a service ace from freshman
Brooklyn Schiffli and two kills from Montgomery.
A 13-0 run put the Gamecocks up 20-5 in the second set. The run included four kills and two blocks from Montgomery.
Kylee Quigley pushed JSU to set point, 24-12 and Montgomery finished off the set with another block for the 25-12 win.
JSU opened the third set on a 10-1 run that included three kills from Kindermann and two from Montgomery. A 5-0 run from the Hatters cut JSU's lead to five, 20-15.
Zoe Gonzales gave the squad match point, 24-19, with a kill, before an attack error secured the 3-0 sweep for the Gamecocks 25-19.
JSU hit .429 in the match, the third-highest mark of the season and held Stetson to .161 clip. In addition, the Gamecocks totaled three services aces and seven total blocks. Junior
Erin Carmichael had 13 digs to lead the side and the 2021 ASUN Setter of the Year,
Lexie Libs, totaled a team-high 38 assists.
Jax State will take on Kennesaw State in the ASUN Conference Tournament Semifinals tomorrow, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. CT in Alico Arena. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats can be found at JSUGamecocksports.com.
