
Gamecocks Finish Third in Final Tuneup For OVC Championship

ESTERO, Fla. – Jacksonville State wrapped up its 2021 men's golf regular season on Tuesday with a third-place finish in the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate.
Senior Jesus Dario Montenegro led the Gamecocks in their final tune up before the Ohio Valley Conference Championship later this month. He finished sixth with a 54-hole score of 214 on the par-72, 7,393-yard Old Corkscrew Golf Club to pace JSU's team score of 876.
The Gamecocks finished behind second-place Jacksonville, while host Florida Gulf Coast won the 12-team event with a 24-under 840. High Point's Brandon Einstein claimed medalist honors in a field of 75 players.
Montenegro capped his three-round event with a one-over 73 on Tuesday to claim the Top 10 finish in his final regular season tournament. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native made 12 total birdies in the tournament, tied for the second-most in the field.
Junior Maximo Portais also shot a final round 73 on Tuesday and used his to move into 11th place. Also a native of Buenos Aires, Portais shot a 54-hole score of 219 to finish just one shot outside of the Top 10.
Junior Patricio Freundt-Thurne had JSU's best round of the day with a one-under 71 that featured a pair of birdies and just one bogey. The native of Lima, Peru put the finishing touches on his 54-hole score of 223 that moved him 18 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 20th.
Junior Jackson Singletary tied for 34th after a final-round 79 capped his 226, while senior Quim Vidal Mora wrapped up the JSU lineup in a tie for 52nd after a final-round 80 finished off his 232.
Senior Max Basler competed as an individual, tying for 56th with a 234 that was capped by an 80 on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks turn their focus to their final appearance in the OVC Golf Championship, which will be held at The Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala. JSU will be defending its three-straight conference titles in the event and looking for a ninth title in its 18th season in the OVC.
