JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State football team returned to action on Friday with a morning practice that will lead into the team's first scrimmage.
Â
After an off day yesterday to get legs back under them, the Gamecocks took to the practice field for a two-hour workout to fine-tune some depth lineups. Now two weeks into camp, the execution during drills becomes a focal point for head coach John Grass.
Â
"I thought guys were trying to push through the heat," said Grass. "I think maybe we took a step back with our execution offensively, but that had a little bit to do with how our defense played, they were flying to the ball defensively. Effort overall was good, we're dealing with the heat and getting them to recognize how their body feels with a scorching practice. Practice will be harder than the game, so we're going to push them hard during this practice time to make it like that."
Â
To cap the second week of action, JSU will hold a closed team scrimmage on Saturday. Grass feels his staff has a good evaluation of the team's talent through practice so far, and expects to cement some of those position battles with tomorrow's drills.
Â
"This will decide the travel list a lot. With this competition every day it's kind of clear cut who's ready to play right now and who's not coming out of this scrimmage. That's kind of what we'll see and identify. We have a few freshmen who are on that bubble and may have a chance to help this team. Some may be ready later on in the season, and some may be ready now."
Â
Jax State will be off Sunday, before continuing with the final days of camp on Monday before class begins next week.
