JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team finished off the Gamecock Classic tournament with a third consecutive sweep, beating Middle Tennessee 3-0.
The Gamecocks (3-0) took a commanding lead in the beginning of the match winning, 25-12 over the 1-1 Blue Raiders. JSU totaled 17 kills in the first set and committed only one error.
Offense served as a bright spot for the Gamecocks tonight, hitting .444 for the match with 46 kills.
Senior
Lena Kindermann led JSU offensively with 15 kills while hitting .560 on the night. Fellow senior
Kaylie Milton offered nine kills in the contest and hit .421. Sophomore
Courtney Glotzbach totaled seven kills and posted a team-high .583 hitting percentage. Senior
Lexie Libs totaled 32 assists and also added two kills.
On the defensive side freshman
Brooklyn Schiffli led the home squad with 13 digs. At the net, junior transfer
Zoe Gonzales led the team in blocks with five, including one solo.
Blocking proved to be an advantage for JSU with 12 total blocks, compared to zero for Middle Tennessee.
After winning the first set, JSU fell behind at times throughout the second, but after regaining the lead, Kindermann held off the Blue Raiders with a kill closing out a set win 25-22.
The third set went much like the first for the Gamecocks, making quick work of the visitors, 25-14.
Junior
Anna Nelson provided three of JSU's four service aces in the final set.
After the contest, Head Coach
Todd Garvey was pleased with the depth he saw from his squad all weekend.
"I thought [ getting three sweeps ] was awesome" said Garvey. "I think our depth really played a big part. For us to find out that we are out two starters right before the match started and have other people step up and play great was awesome. Loved our energy and effort and I thought we played very good defense which was awesome to see."
Sophomore
Sadie Brown earned his first start of the season and totaled five kills to go along with one block.
JSU will be back in THE PETE on Tuesday, August 31 against UT Chattanooga at 6 p.m. Admission is free and fans may also stream the match on ESPN+.
