Gamecocks Set For Charleston Southern Tournament - Jacksonville State University Athletics

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State volleyball team will face its first road test of the season in Charleston, South Carolina, Friday and Saturday.

The Gamecocks are one of three teams competing in the Charleston Southern Tournament hosted by the CSU Bucs.

On Friday, Sept.3 JSU will take on the Wyoming Cowgirls for the first time in program history. First serve is at 9 a.m. CST.

Wyoming enters the contest 2-2 on the season after a pair of wins over Sienna and a pair of losses to St. Mary's.

Jax State enters the neutral site match 4-0 on the season following four consecutive sweeps that include Gardner-Webb, Alabama State, Middle Tennessee and Chattanooga.

The 4-0 start is the fourth in program history and second consecutive under Head Coach Todd Garvey for the Gamecocks. JSU opened the season with 15 straight wins last year, all in conference games, but have never opened the season with five consecutive non-conference wins. This weekend, Jax State will seek six straight non-conference wins. If completed, it would be just the second time in program history. The first time was in 2017.

Offense has been the story for the season so far as JSU leads the ASUN with a .350 hit percentage. Against Middle Tennessee the squad hit for .444, the third-highest mark in program history. The record book performance was followed up with a .260 mark against Chattanooga, the lowest on the season. The Gamecocks hit percentage ranks fourth in the nation just behind BYU and seven spots ahead of No. 1 ranked Texas.

Senior Lena Kindermann is leading the Gamecocks in kills with 38 while hitting .478 on the season and averaging .380 kills per set. The outsider hitter is just 16 kills away from becoming the 21st player in program history to notch 1,000 kills. The last to reach the feat was current Assistant Coach Mackenzie Rombach.

Junior Zoe Gonzales led JSU in kills against the Mocs, recording a career-high 12. She is hitting an impressive .524 on the season to lead the ASUN. Gonzales also leads the Gamecocks in blocks with nine total. She recorded a season-high six against Middle Tennessee.

Reigning Freshman of the Week Brooklyn Schiffli totaled a career-high17 digs against the Mocs and leads JSU with 52 on the season. The Indianapolis, Indiana native is fourth in the ASUN in digs and third in digs per set with 4.33. She has started all four matches at libero.

JSU has never faced Wyoming but is 4-2 all-time against Charleston Southern. The Gamecocks last traveled to Charleston in 2019 for the College of Charleston Tournament. The tournament resulted in 3-0 wins over New Orleans and College of Charleston and a 3-1 loss to Charleston Southern.

Jax State and the Bucs will face-off at 10 a.m. CST on Saturday. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
