JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State Gamecocks suffered their first home loss since 2019, 3-2 to North Florida (13-1) Saturday night.
The Gamecocks fell to 11-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play after the loss.
North Florida opened the first set on a 6-1 run. The Ospreys continued to build on their lead as the set progressed, winning 25-17.
JSU paralleled North Florida's set one performance, jumping out to an 11-6 lead in the second following 5-0 run that was capped by a
Zoe Gonzales kill. The Gamecocks extended the lead to seven, 18-11 following a
Addie Halverson kill that capped a 4-1 run. JSU held North Florida to just three points the rest of the way, winning the set 25-14 off an Osprey attack error.
To begin the third set, JSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead following a North Florida attack error. The Ospreys responded with a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead. The Gamecocks regained the lead, 10-9, following a service ace from
Lexie Libs, capping a 3-0 run. North Florida once again answered the Gamecocks with a 3-0 run of their own to lead 12-10. Both sides traded points and short two-point runs through the middle of the second set. After North Florida tied the set, 22-22, the Gamecocks took a 24-222 advantage following back-to-back kills from
Katie Montgomery. Back-to-back points for the Ospreys tied the set back up 24-24.
Addie Halverson gave the Gamecocks their second set-point, 25-24, but a 3-0 run by the Ospreys ended the set with a 27-25 win for North Florida.
Scoring was back-and-forth to begin the fourth set until the Gamecocks took an 11-9 lead following a
Kylee Quigley service ace. Halverson put JSU up 15-12 with a kill, capping a 3-0 run. The gamecocks used a 4-0 run to lead, 20-14, following a kill from
Lena Kindermann. JSU held North Florida to just three points the rest of the set, winning 25-17 and forcing a tieb reaking fifth set.
In the fifth set, JSU took an early 4-3 lead following a Montgomery kill, but a 4-0 run by North Florida put the Gamecocks behind 7-4. The Ospreys extended the lead to six, 13-7, following back-to-back Gamecock attack errors. North Florida would go on to win the set, 15-9, winning the match 3-2 overall.
Halverson led the Gamecocks with 14 kills in the match and added three digs. Three other Gamecocks added double-digit kills.
Erin Carmichael totaled a season-high 20 digs to lead the Gamecocks. Libs tied her season-high with 48 assists. Gonzales was once again active at the net, recording four blocks, but Montgomery led the squad with season-high eight total blocks.
JSU outhit North Florida in the match .222 to .203 and recorded 12 blocks compared to 11 by the Ospreys. The Gamecocks also held a 60-56 advantage in kills. North Florida held the advantage in service aces, 6-4.
