JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State University and the City of Oxford announced on Tuesday that they will host the 2022 Alabama High School Athletic Association's State Baseball Championships from May 16-21 at Jim Case Stadium and Choccolocco Park.
The City of Oxford approved to bring the six-day event to Calhoun County at its City Council meeting on Tuesday. The AHSAA Central Board gave the AHSAA staff permission to study an alternative site for the upcoming 2022 State Baseball Championships, due to a schedule conflict with Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium. The home of the Montgomery Biscuits has hosted the event for the past several years.
The 2022 State Baseball Championships will feature best-of-three series for each of the AHSAA's seven classifications. The week will start with the first game of the Class 3A series at JSU's Jim Case Stadium on Monday at 7 p.m., and the 3A champion will be crowned at JSU on Tuesday. The rest of the classifications will play game one at Choccolocco Park's Signature Field and games two and three (if necessary) at Jim Case Stadium.
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome the AHSAA and its Baseball State Championships to our city, our campus and to our world-class baseball facility this season," JSU Athletics Director Greg Seitz said. "When the opportunity to partner with the City of Oxford and Choccolocco Park was presented, it was a no-brainer for us.
"We feel like we have one of the best places to play and to watch baseball in the nation and we are looking forward to making the 2022 championships a great experience for the student-athletes and everyone involved."
Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium was opened in the 2019 season after a renovation to the home of JSU Baseball since 1995.
The stadium includes a 1,000 seat spectator grandstand with a shade canopy, four VIP suites that will be able to entertain large groups with seating inside and outside, a new state-of-the-art press box to include radio and television broadcast booths, a game operations center.
The Gamecocks' home dugout is located along the first-base line and adjacent to a new clubhouse that features a locker room, lounge, team meeting area and athletic training treatment area. The clubhouse is attached to an enclosed training facility that will allow for batting and pitching workouts. Step-down team dugouts, bullpens, new coaches offices and meeting space will also is included in the state-of-the-art facility.
JSU drew 1,112 on Opening Day in 2019 for the first official game in the renovated complex. The Gamecocks hosted Auburn and Alabama during the 2019 campaign and combined for nearly 4,000 in attendance. JSU had an announced crowd of 1,527 when Georgia visited Jacksonville during the 2019 season. In 31 home games in 2019, JSU averaged 1,037 in attendance. Jax State ranked in the Top 75 in attendance in NCAA Division I Baseball.
Choccolocco Park is no stranger to JSU Baseball, either. Oxford hosted the Gamecocks' home games there in 2017 and 2018 during the construction on Jim Case Stadium. The 2017 and 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championships were also held there.
"We are very excited about co-hosting the baseball finals and appreciate the great relationship we have with the AHSAA," Oxford Parks and Recreation Director Don Hudson said. "We look forward to having an excellent tournament."
Oxford already hosts the AHSAA Softball State Championships, an event that moved to Choccolocco Park in 2021. The 2022 Softball Championships will be held May 17-21 at the complex.
