CLARKSVILLE, TENN. –
Lena Kindermann set a season-high of 24 kills in Jacksonville State's four-set road victory over Austin Peay (17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-20) on Sunday. By taking down the Governors in the Volunteer State, JSU finishes the regular season with five consecutive wins and claims the three-seed setting into this week's ASUN Conference Tournament.
Sunday's match at Winfield Dunn Center did not start out on the best note for the Gamecocks. JSU started a bit slow, allowing a vengeful Austin Peay squad to take the first set 25-17. The home team tallied 16 kills in the first set and hit a whopping .400.
After that rough start, Jax State appeared to settle in in the second. A 5-1 start gave Garvey's squad plenty of momentum, and they led for most of the frame by five or more points. A spread-out offensive attack down the stretch kept the Governor defense off balance as JSU garnered a 25-20 set victory.
Jacksonville State came out of the intermission firing on all cylinders. A smothering defense attack forced Austin Peay into eight attack errors. Meanwhile, a 7-2 scoring run midway through the set and a 5-0 run to close it out highlighted a dominant interval in which the JSU offense hit .313 and downed the Governors 25-13.
Though the home team fought until the very end, the Gamecocks were simply too much for them in the fourth set. 13 team kills followed for JSU and a mistake-filled day for Austin Peay became that much worse with six more attack errors. Two Kindermann kills, a
Kylee Quigley ace, and an attack error ended the match on a 4-0 run as JSU pulled away for a 25-20 set win.
Kindermann's 24 kills and one block played big parts in Sunday's four-setter. The left-handed outside hitter hit .500in Clarksville, Tenn., capping off one of her most dominant outings of the year.
