JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's men's basketball team officially opens the 2022-23 season Monday night against Shorter University at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Â
Unofficially, Jax State and Shorter last met on the hardwood in a preseason exhibition prior to the start of the 2016-17 season for coach Ray Harper's first game on the bench for the Gamecocks. During the regular season, the two last met on Nov. 23, 2004 in a 112-94 win for JSU. Monday marks the 44th all-time meeting between the Hawks and Gamecocks. Aside from the last two matchups in 2003 and 2004, the first 42 meetings came prior to 1988 during JSU's Division II days. The Gamecocks historically dominated the series leading 38-5, including 23-straight victories dating back to January of 1970.
Â
The Gamecocks are coming off a 101-93 victory over one of Shorter's fellow Gulf South Conference members, Auburn-Montgomery, on Thursday night. Senior transfer Skyelar Potter stole the show in his debut with 42 points in the exhibition contest. Jax State needed Potter's strong night as the visiting Warhawks shot 53-percent to hand around until the closing minutes.
Â
Behind Potter, senior Demaree King posted 17 points in the exhibition, while fellow returners Maros Zeliznak and Juwan Perdue pulled down team-highs with six rebounds apiece. In addition to Amanze Ngumezi and JJ Platt returning to action for the first time since 2020-21, the Gamecocks featured several new faces last week in Peyton Daniels, Cam McDowell, Mason Nicholson and true freshman Travis Roberts.
Â
Monday's tip-off against the Hawks is set for 8 p.m. It will follow JSU's women's season-opener, which is also against Shorter at 5:45. The action will stream on ESPN+ with Mickey Shadrix and Gerhard Mathangani on the call, while Hall of Famer Mike Parris brings you all the action over the airwaves of the Gamecock Sports Network as he begins his 40th season behind the mic for Gamecock basketball. Live stats are also available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
